Distinguished and Famous people from Alexandra

Alexandra is the birthplace of people whose later lives crossed politics and international athletics. These connections are with the Victorian town, rather than similarly named places elsewhere.

๐Ÿค Pattie Menzies

Pattie Menzies was born Pattie Maie Leckie in Alexandra in 1899. Her father, John William Leckie, was a politician, and she encountered political campaigning through his public life before her marriage to Robert Menzies. Later schooling took her to Melbourne. Her Alexandra birthplace places a person closely associated with Australia's longest-serving prime minister within the town's own history, while her childhood family background shows that politics was familiar territory before her marriage.

๐Ÿค Bridget McKenzie

Bridget McKenzie was born in Alexandra in 1969. Before entering federal politics she worked in education, including teaching and university roles. She began serving in the Senate in 2011 after election in 2010. Her connection with Alexandra is a birthplace connection; the subsequent career belongs to the broader story of Victorian representation in the Australian Parliament.

๐Ÿƒ Ray Weinberg

Hurdler Ray Weinberg was born in Alexandra in 1926 and represented Australia at the London Olympics in 1948 and Helsinki in 1952. He finished sixth in the 110-metre hurdles at Helsinki and also competed in both relays. A silver medal at the 1950 British Empire Games and seven Australian championships added to his competitive record. Later he worked in coaching and athletics administration.
